Also in the photograph is Olympus Mons - a very large shield volcano - shield volcanoes have gently sloping sides. The volcano has a height of nearly 22 km (13.6 miles or 72,000 ft)
Mars has seasons like Earth, but they last twice as long. This is because Mars is tilted on its axis by about 25.19 degrees, which is similar to the axial tilt of the Earth (22.5 degrees).
Below: Mars’ Valles Marineris, the longest and deepest canyon in the entire Solar System. It is 4,000 kilometres (2,500 miles) long – ten times longer than the Grand Canyon and nearly four times deeper.
