The Solar System: Mars

Mars Facts

Diameter: 6,792 Km (4,221 miles)
Distance from Sun: 228 million km (142 million miles)

Time for one rotation: 24 hours 37 minutes
Time to go round the sun once: 687 days

Right: Ice forms at the north pole of Mars in the northern winter. It is so cold that some of the ice is frozen carbon dioxide.

Also in the photograph is Olympus Mons - a very large shield volcano - shield volcanoes have gently sloping sides. The volcano has a height of nearly 22 km (13.6 miles or 72,000 ft)

Mars has seasons like Earth, but they last twice as long. This is because Mars is tilted on its axis by about 25.19 degrees, which is similar to the axial tilt of the Earth (22.5 degrees).

Below: Mars’ Valles Marineris, the longest and deepest canyon in the entire Solar System. It is 4,000 kilometres (2,500 miles) long – ten times longer than the Grand Canyon and nearly four times deeper.

Sand storms sometimes cover the entire surface NASA's Curiosity Rover on the surface
