Polar Bears

Pregnant polar bears enter their den and hibernate for a period of between four and eight months starting in mid-October or November.

In the south of their range cubs are born in February; in the north it can be as late as May.

During their time in the den the mother bear does not eat, drink, urinate or defecate - they give birth to their cubs and suckle them.
