Camels

Camels have very long legs - this keeps their bodies as far away from the hot ground, which in desert regions can reach 70C.

Having said that, camels can withstand changes in body temperature that would kill other animals:

At dawn their bodies are at about 34C and gradually increase to 40C by the end of the day.

Did you know?

There are more than a million camels in Australia!

They are not native Australian animals but they were introduced into Australia in the 1840s, brought in as ideals means of transport on that country's vast deserts.

Now that lorries and trains have taken over the transport jobs that camels used to do they have "gone wild" in deserts just as suitable for them as the deserts from which they came.

Now they are a nuisance, destroying habitats and competing with native animals and humans for resources.
